Overview:

The Software Engineering Team Lead is responsible for leading a team of Software Engineers while contributing to the design, delivery, and operation of the Machine Learning and AI platform. The role combines people leadership with technical leadership, ensuring the team delivers secure, scalable, and maintainable platform capabilities that enable teams across the organisation to build, deploy, and operate machine learning and generative AI solutions.

Working closely with engineers, data scientists, architects, product managers, and platform teams, the Software Engineering Team Lead helps shape the technical direction of the team, promotes engineering excellence, and creates an environment where engineers can develop, collaborate, and deliver high-quality software. The role also provides day-to-day line management, supporting engineers through coaching, mentoring, performance management, and career development.

Roles/Responsibilities:

• Build, lead, and develop a high-performing team of Software Engineers, creating an inclusive environment that champions diversity and enables engineers to do their best work.
• Recruit, onboard, mentor, and coach engineers, supporting their career development and helping them reach their potential. Set clear objectives for engineers, provide regular feedback.
• Design, develop, and maintain tooling and platform capabilities that support scalable Data Science, MLOps, LLMOps, and generative AI solutions using Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock, and other AWS services.
• Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or similar technologies, and build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline, Jenkins, or similar tooling.
• Support monitoring, logging, and observability using CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar tools.
• Provide technical leadership within the team, promoting engineering excellence through software engineering best practices, automated testing, code reviews, continuous integration, secure software development, and continuous improvement.
• Contribute to the technical direction of the platform, working closely with architects, engineering leaders, product managers, data scientists, and stakeholders to deliver platform capabilities and quarterly objectives.

Essential:

• Experience leading, mentoring, or developing engineers while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
• Experience working collaboratively with engineering, architecture, product, and platform teams to deliver technical outcomes.
• Strong software engineering and platform engineering experience, with proficiency in Python or a similar programming language.
• Strong experience designing, developing and operating cloud-based platforms, in AWS.
• Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD and modern DevOps practices.
• Strong experience supporting production platforms, including reliability, security, monitoring, troubleshooting and operational practices.
• Experience providing technical leadership, setting engineering standards and mentoring engineers across a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable:

• Experience designing and operating ML/AI platforms or MLOps/LLMOps environments.
• Hands-on experience with AWS ML/AI services such as SageMaker and Bedrock.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or other container platforms at scale.
• Experience with platform architecture, networking and distributed/event-driven systems.
• Experience with observability and platform engineering tooling such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana or similar.
