As a Senior Software Engineer (Java/Scala) to join the Data Systems team you will play a key role in maintaining and evolving data services and APIs used widely across the BBC, including Articles, Weather and Location data. You will contribute to technical decisionmaking, work closely with cross-functional teams, and mentor junior developers while adopting modern Java/Scala practices and AWS services.
Scope:
• Design, build, and maintain reliable, scalable backend systems in Java/Scala.
• Contribute to architectural discussions and lead technical decision-making.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
• Optimise system performance and reliability using AWS cloud services.
• Support the full software development lifecycle – from concept to deployment and
• monitoring.
• Review code, mentor team members, and promote best practices.
• Promote operational best practice, aligning with broader BBC tooling and standards
• as appropriate.
Requirements:
• Hands-on experience with Java for back-end development, with 3+ years
• experience.
• Hands-on experience with AWS technologies such as Lambda, EC2, API Gateway,
• SQS, SNS, S3, or equivalents.
• Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices.
• Experience with databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, DocumentDB).
• Proficient with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices.
• Experience with automated testing, including unit, integration and contract tests.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Fluent English
Desired but not required:
• Big advantage is hands-on experience with Scala
• Working knowledge of a broader range of AWS services.
• Familiarity working with geospatial data.
• Experience designing and building event driven architectures and systems,
• operating at scale.
• Experience with CloudWatch for monitoring and alerting.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies and working in cross-functional squads.
• Bash and Python scripting skills to perform diagnostics and support development
workflows
